Polka Movie Enjoyed by 300

at Cleveland Art Museum

More than 300 music-lovers attended a special screening of Polka! The Movie, the documentary about Slovenian music in America, at the Cleveland Museum of Art in University Circle, on Sunday, January 15, 2012. The National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum hosted the film with a polka jam session including musicians Linda Hochevar, Frank Moravcik, Fred Ziwich and Mark Habat. Hall of Fame trustee Joe Valencic, who wrote and narrated the film, shared behind-the-scenes stories on the making of Polka! The Movie.

The film was well-received by the audience, with patrons clapping in time with America’s Polka King, the late Frank Yankovic, singing “Just Because,” as the final credits rolled. Among the viewers were Buddy Griebel, a member of Yankovic’s Hollywood show band; Tom Klein, who was interviewed in the film about his in-law, accordionist-boxer Eddie Simms; and relatives of the late Mitzi Jerman, whose century-old tavern was featured.

Polka! The Movie was directed by Dusan Moravec for TV Slovenia. The showing was part of a Cleveland Museum of Art series of films featuring American styles of music. Polka! The Movie is being scheduled for screenings in Florida and Minnesota. For more information on the film, check the Facebook page for Polka! The Movie, or contact the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum, (216) 261-FAME or www.polkafame.com.
